“‘Round About Midnight” marked the beginning of a collaboration between Miles Davis and the Columbia Records label that would last over thirty years. It also launched his long-standing partnership with the then-unknown saxophonist John Coltrane. Together with Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, and pianist Red Garland, Davis, who had become known for bebop and cool jazz, recorded a set in 1957 that set new standards. During this time, he developed into one of the coolest stars of the jazz scene, confident and undeniably hip.
Musically unusual and timeless, “‘Round About Midnight” becomes almost physically tangible on the MFSL reissue. Mastered by Krieg Wunderlich and Shawn R. Britton, the SuperVinyl version traces the individual paths of each musician involved and unites them in a new sonic masterpiece. The recording was made in three sessions, and the music has never sounded so immediate.
