The CD box Mariss Jansons Portrait newly published by BR-KLASSIK contains a total of 5 CDs, which offer a representative cross-section of the classical symphonic repertoire and a cross-section of the repertoire for which the chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra repeatedly and in particular due to his excellent interpretive qualities are praised. There are landmarks of great choral music as well as milestones from the development of the symphony and selected orchestral songs. The spectrum ranges from the Viennese Classic to the late Romanticism of the early 20th century: from Haydn’s Harmoniemesse (with the soloists Malin Hartelius, Michaela Knab, Judith Schmid, Christian Elsner, Bernhard Schneider, Franz-Josef Selig and the Bavarian Radio Chorus) and the minuet from Haydn’s Symphony Hob. I: 88, Beethoven’s fourth symphony, Brahms fourth symphony and Mahler’s ninth symphony to Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony op. 64 and his last four songs (with the excellent soloist Anja Harteros). And the fifth CD offers Stravinsky’s psalm symphony (with the Bavarian Radio Chorus), Varèses symphonic poem Amérique’s impressive masterpieces of the 20th century, both recordings for the first time on CD and Shostakovich’s sixth symphony.
