He was one of the much-played composers of the Schreker-Zemlinsky generation: At the time of the Weimar Republic, Walter Braunfels was, alongside Richard Strauss, an important representative of moderate modernism. The judgment on the music of Braunfels was timeless and out of time. It became an ardent Catholic after World War II and was removed from office and public perception in 1933 because of its Jewish roots. His works are accordingly shaped by a Christian-humanistic attitude. This is also the case with the mystery play Annunciation, which was created in 1933 and reflected the great themes of the time in a medieval-historicizing way, such as the question of the meaning of innocent suffering. With a wide range of timbres, Braunfels paints a musical tableau with late romantic-sensual and reduced-archaic passages.
