Miles In The Sky marks jazz giant Davis’ transition from modal to fusion jazz. He already shows great ease in handling electrically amplified instruments and is at the same time ready for excursions into unknown territories. This album is the fifth and last with the second Miles Davis Quintet with which Davis made music history. Tony Williams (percussion), Herbie Hancock (piano), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Ron Carter (bass) and guest George Benson (guitar) play wide-open soundscapes peppered with humor, bossa nova, country and ballroom overtones.
Remastered by Shawn R. Britton for Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Miles In The Sky features even more sonic information. Benson’s blues guitar almost seems to breathe smoke rings into the air, William’s sweaty percussion can be felt and Hancock’s piano hovers above it all with sublime clarity. The hybrid SACD is released in a limited edition gatefold sleeve with a consecutive serial number.
