Archie Shepp, Jason Moran – Let My People Go (2LPs, L’autre)

Whole books can be written about ARCHIE SHEPP. Born in Fort Lauderdale in 1937, the jazz musician, composer and theater scholar began his incredible music career in the 1950s. His incredible talent helped the saxophonist to world fame within a very short time. In the early years he played with DON CHERRY, JOHN COLTRANE, LEE MORGAN, BOBBY HUTCHERSON and other well-known musicians. His reputation in the international jazz scene was very high. In the 1960s, SHEPP also advanced to become one of the most important representatives of avant-free jazz. In the following decades, the musician devoted himself more to the traditional Afro-American music styles of gospel and blues. During this time, SHEPP also began teaching at the University of Massachusetts. Further albums followed with, among others, CHET BAKER, ROSWELL RUDD and JOACHIM KUHN. The pianist JASON MORAN completed his music studies in Houston in 1993, released critically acclaimed solo works such as ‘Soundtrack to Human Motion’ or ‘Modernistic’ and has since worked together with artists such as GREG OSBY, TARUS MATEEN, CASSANDRA WILSON and STEPHANIE RICHARDS. He has been awarded the MacArthur Fellowship and the ECHO Jazz, among others, and was even appointed to the AMPAS, which awards the Oscars, in 2018. The almost unsurpassable experience of both musicians in interaction is perfectly coordinated and in spite of everything unbroken and surprising in terms of creativity.
