Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor (SACD, HDCD, Reference Recordings)

The present recording by the Austrian conductor was made in 2018 at the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh. In very personal liner notes in the accompanying booklet, Maestro Honeck gives an insight into the history and musical structure of Bruckner’s last composition. He describes how he interprets the masterpiece as a conductor and quotes the Bruckner biographer Max Auer: “The Ninth Symphony surpasses all its predecessors in grandeur and consecration. When Arthur Schopenhauer sees art as an image of an idea, but music as an idea in itself describes, then Bruckner’s Schwanengesang appears to us as an idea of the afterlife, the deity itself. From the beginning of the first movement you feel surrounded by the twilight of a Gothic cathedral – a mood that frees us from the heaviness and fatigue of matter and takes us into the afterlife leads.” We recommend the use of “L’Art du Son” CD / DVD conditioner to improve the sound even more.
