After the Christmas Oratorio, the Bavarian Radio Choir and its Artistic Director Peter Dijkstra will once again present a major work by Johann Sebastian Bach in a live recording on CD and DVD: the St. Matthew Passion. The renowned original sound orchestra Concerto Köln, which can already be heard on several BR-KLASSIK CDs together with the BR choir, performs as an instrumental partner. The evangelist is designed by the young tenor Julian Prégardien, who has made a name for himself around the world as an expert in Bach’s evangelistic roles. Further soloists are Karina Gauvin, Gerhild Romberger, Maximilian Schmitt, Michael Nagy and Karl-Magnus Fredriksson. For the two favorite choirs of the St. Matthew Passion, the proven, radiant sound of the Regensburg Cathedral Sparrows was available at the concert, which was staged with atmospheric light effects. The Leipzig Thomaskantor Bach composed the St. Matthew Passion in 1727 for the Good Friday Vespers service. It depicts the passion of Jesus in a multifaceted and vivid way according to the Gospel of Matthew. Bach’s highly emotional musical language and the artistic interlocking of chorales, arias and choirs on different narrative levels make this work so unique.
