Jacqueline Du Pre, Daniel Barenboim – Cello Concertos (LP, Warner)

I’ve never met anyone for whom music was such a natural form of expression as Jacqueline. She was able to immerse herself in the sound in a way I’ve never experienced with any other musician. The conductor Daniel Barenboim was not only the husband but also the musical partner of Jaqueline du Pre, who died much too young. In 1967, shortly after the sensational start of her career, the only 22-year-old soloist recorded cello concertos by Haydn and Boccherini with Barenboim magnificent examples of the genuine vitality with which du Pre knew how to enchant the world. The concerts sound – not least because of the modern remastering – even after 50 years rousing, fresh, transparent and colorful.
