John Coltrane – Standard Coltrane (LP, Analogue Productions)

In July 11, 1958, when he recorded “Standard Coltrane,” John Coltrane favored familiar and unfamiliar melodies from his youth, seeking new structures and inspiration in them. The album, which was only released in 1962, was made for Prestige Records with trumpeter Wilbur Harden, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Coltrane’s groundbreaking modal post-bob of Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” was still in the future. Instead, you can hear, among other things, a ten-minute version of the standard “Invitation”.
