John Coltrane – With The Red Garland Trio (LP, Analogue Productions)

For his second album, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane teamed up with his Prestige colleagues Red Garland (piano). Together, they led the quartet, augmented by Paul Chambers (bass) and Art Taylor (drums), through a five-track set. The 1958 recording undoubtedly centers on Coltrane, playing with equal measure of confidence and ease. But Chambers also shows all his skills, for example when he records and mirrors Coltrane’s complex compositions in bass blues.
