What was Mozart really like? Was he a flawless and infinitely good person, as his admirer Tchaikovsky believed? Or did he have “the demonic spirit of his genius in control”, as Goethe whispered? Even this audio biography will not solve the mystery of Mozart. But Mozart, embodied by the Viennese actor Florian Teichtmeister, should come to life in his thinking and feeling, his everyday life and his epoch – strictly according to the original sources. The mighty of Europe fondle the child prodigy, but they ignore the mature artist. The early opera career in Italy silted up in cramped Salzburg. His works are hailed and ignored. In the 18th century music was still a low rank among the arts. But Mozart dared to take on all of them. He elevated music to a universal art that encompasses all aspects of being human. He dares to exist as a freelance artist and is looking for a job at the court until the end. His piano concertos are a synthesis of commerce and the highest art that has never been achieved again. Mozart stands between the worlds, an unstable position that actually allows him to live “without rest and rest”. These four CDs allow you to hear the incredible path of Mozart’s artistic development. The narrator is Udo Wachtveitl, while the author is Jörg Handstein, who already traced the lives of Mahler, Wagner and Verdi in the form of audio biographies in the BR -KLASSIK WISSEN series. The audio biography is supplemented by the legendary recordings of two Mozart piano concertos: The 1973 recording of Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat major, KV 456, played virtuously by Martha Argerich with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Eugen Jochum. The Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major KV 488, played by Daniel Barenboim under the direction of Rafael Kubelík, is a highly vital, exemplary recording from 1970.
