In his nine symphonies, Gustav Mahler built a whole worldview for himself and his listeners. More than almost any other composer, he tried in his symphonic work to get to the bottom of the cycle of life, that eternal cycle of growth and decay. Which complete works would be better suited to express the qualities and the unique sound ideal of a leading orchestra of today? In the complete edition compiled by BR Klassik on a total of 11 CDs, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra deals with Gustav Mahler’s symphonic uvre, directed by some of his most influential conductors, but above all by his former chief conductor Mariss Jansons, who died in 2019. The live recordings were made between 1996 and 2016 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig and the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence; most of them are more recent. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Mariss Jansons the Symphonies No. 2, 5, 7 and 9, Bernard Haitink No. 3 and 4, Daniel Harding No. 6 and Colin Davis the Symphony of a Thousand No. 8 Numerous soloists and choirs also take part.
