Phoebe Bridgers Stranger In The Alps (LP, Dead Oceans)

The ten haunting songs on Phoebe Bridgers’ debut album, “Stranger In The Alps,” were produced by Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska and perfectly showcase the 22-year-old singer’s unique voice. A delicate balance prevails on her album, a dance between hidden stories and honest emotions, between whispers and screams. On the album, Phoebe Bridgers examines and reflects on her personal experiences through her unique songwriting perspective: There are obvious references to lost idols, canonical pop songs, and actual events. But her stories unfold through the specific, atmospheric imagery, sung in her tender, confessional style. According to Bridgers, everything you hear on the album is a matter of feeling; her music comes to her when she’s at her most honest, without a specific plan; she wants to be the person she is in the world in her songs. “I wasn’t trying to be too lo-fi, too hi-fi, too self-serious, too disingenuous. I feel pretty confident that I’m finding my voice,” says Bridgers. “I wanted the album to completely represent who I am and these songs are representative of what I set out to do.” Before “Stranger In The Alps,” Phoebe Bridgers had already released three songs that were produced by Ryan Adams in his L.A. studio and released on his label. Since 2016, she has toured with Julian Baker, Conor Oberst, Ryan Adams and others. BRIGHT EYES mastermind Oberst also appears on “Stranger In The Alps” as a guest vocalist on the song “Would You Rather.”
