“Super Bass” from Capri Records is an album dedicated to the great guitarist Freddie Green. The project was initiated by the two “super” bassists Ray Brown and John Clayton, along with Jeff Hamilton (drums) and Freddie Green himself. As the title suggests, the ensemble’s recordings from September 1988 contain some of the finest bass-heavy jazz pieces ever recorded. Ray Brown says of the album:
“Super Bass has been my dream for ages. In 1945 I recorded ‘One Bass Hit’ and in 1946 ‘Two Bass Hit.’ All this time I had the idea of doing the triple and hitting the home run. Well, I think ‘Super Bass’ is the fulfillment of both those dreams. First of all, I had this young student who returned from Indiana University as an absolute ‘magician’ of the bass. He was also studying conducting and arranging and will become one of the best arrangers in the music industry.” His name is John Clayton, and he is an important part of this album.
Acoustic Sounds is now honoring this legendary album with a limited-edition, sonically outstanding 180-gram vinyl release – remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab) and manufactured by Quality Record Pressings.
