Kyrill Kondraschin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra: What was planned as a happy relationship between one of the most important representatives of the Russian conducting school and the first-class Munich orchestra ended tragically with the conductor’s sudden death before he could take up the position of the orchestra’s new chief conductor. This audio document is all the more important. The concert recording from Munich’s Herkulessaal includes an exciting program that juxtaposes two late romantic works from different symphonic cultures: Rimsky-Korsakov’s overture ‘Russian Easter’ and César Franck’s only symphony in D minor.
