Two orchestral works can be heard on the new CD from BR Klassik, with which their authors, the two later so important romantic composers Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, tried each other as symphonists: In his third symphony in D major D 200, composed in early summer In 1815, and presumably performed in a lovers’ concert, the 18-year-old Franz Schubert emancipated himself from the style copies of his first and second symphonies and found his own musical expression. None of his symphonies were to have a public performance during his lifetime; the third was only presented in London in 1881 and immediately received enthusiastically. Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38, was a great success and at the same time an impressive success for the 31-year-old composer: the work was premiered two months after its completion in January 1841 by Felix Mendelssohn in the Leipzig Gewandhaus and was performed by the audience immediately greeted frenetically. Both works radiate youthful freshness and a deeply positive attitude: like Robert Schumann’s Spring Symphony, which was born in four days in a fiery hour, contemporaries would also have Franz Schubert’s Third Symphony, which was composed in nine days and which is more dance-like, folk-song-like and bubbly Movement is alive and can be given a similar nickname. With Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, both pieces are in the best of hands.
