Schtschedrin: Carmen-Suite / Respighi: Pini di Roma (Mariss Jansons) (CD, Br-Klassik)

Two famous orchestral works, which were composed in the 20th century, but each breathe the spirit of 19th century music, can be heard on this new album by BR-KLASSIK: the ballet music Carmen Suite, which was masterfully arranged and further developed by Rodion Shchedrin in 1968 the famous melodies from George Bizet’s opera of the same name and Ottorino Respighi’s famous symphonic poem Pini di Roma (The Pines of Rome) from 1924. The works are still among the most popular compositions in international concert halls to this day. The recordings were made at concerts in November 2017 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig (Schtschedrin) and in May 2019 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence (Respighi). Jansons, who died at the end of November at the age of 76 as a result of a heart disease, can be heard here again with an irrepressible temperament and the joy of playing that characterized him to the end.
