Omara Portuondo is probably Cuba’s most famous singer. Omara already had a successful career as a singer and dancer in Cuba when she was discovered by Ry Cooder and Nick Gold and eventually achieved international fame as the only singer on the album Buena Vista Social Club.
After World Circuit recorded albums with other Buena Vista Social Club artists, Rubén González and Ibrahim Ferrer, they returned to EGREM studios in Havana to record Omara. The result is an album reminiscent of the heyday of big bands. Since then, Omara Portuondo has been touring all over the world and at the age of 88 is currently on a big farewell tour.
Buena Vista Social Club presents … Omara Portuondo addresses unrequited love. Her sonorous and expressive voice was staged by the Cuban arranger Demetrio Muñiz (director of Havana’s famous Tropicana cabaret), combined with a rich and varied accompaniment to the recordings. Lush string sections, Compay Segundo’s clarinet section, traditional septeto music, jazz big band style of the 50s and a string quartet as well as other unusual combinations alternate. A sound that could only be made in Cuba.
Omara reflects: “The recording is very important to me. My heart is filled with so many wonderful memories and emotions. I thank everyone who has supported me on my wonderful musical journey.”
